The IOK award-winning Debate team is open to middle school and high school students from across the community. Under the tutelage of Thomas Alameddine, our students learn to formulate, defend and articulate their arguments and points of view with skill and grace. Our Debate program is a member of the Orange County Debate League (OCDL) and the High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP). The IOK Debate Program is offered afterschool two days a week. This is an opportunity for all 5th–8th students to get involved in research, writing and public speaking. Competitive regional events are held once every six weeks throughout the school year. IOK Alumni return to help coach and assist the Debate Program and the Afterschool Club program. IOK Debate alumni lead Orange County Debate League (OCDL) debate workshops, and judge and assist with OCDL debates. This opportunity is open to all students within our community, regardless of whether they are IOK students are not. Please email debate@instituteofknowledge.com to find out more. IOK Students have placed regionally in the Orange County Debate League earning designations of Distinguished Speakers as well as placing in the top 15 teams across the county in 2019.
To encourage students in the STEAM fields, all IOK students from TK–8th grade participate in the annual IOK School STEAM Science Fair, with the winners moving on to the county and state science fairs. TK–2nd make group projects for the STEAM Fair and KG–2nd do oral presentations to students in the other classes in their department. Students in 3rd–8th do public oral and visual presentations to their classmates and judges from the IOK community. In addition, 9th and 10th students do public presentations to parents and middle and high school students of their projects, which are also submitted to the Toshiba Science Competition. High school presentations are in the form of PowerPoints and display boards. IOK Students have gone onto STEAM Science Fairs on a state-wide level and brought home 2nd and 3rd place trophies.
MIST-SoCal’s Most Winning Team, Top Coach Recepients, and Top Overall Score Recepient for two consecutive years, the Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament enables students to compete regionally and internationally in diverse topics related to athletics, Quran, Spoken Word, Debate, Public Service and much more. IOK School alumni participate and volunteer as assistance coaches and judges.
Our 1st to 8th grade students participate in a Spelling Bee. Winners are invited to attend the regional interschool Spelling bee in which IOK Students have gone on to place in the top three categories.
The Student Leadership organization for High School students encourages public service opportunities and student-centered outreach via newsletters, field day and other exciting events. To join the SLO, students must qualify with a strong academic standing and enthusiasm to spend time in activities after school.
Each Year, IOK’s 10th grade graduating class takes a trip to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah for Umrah during Spring Break. This opportunity allows for students to build relationships that will last a life-time, rooted in spiritual memory as partners in travel during this beautiful, life-changing journey.
Annually, community volunteers work with IOK School students and staff to amass an amazing compilation of student and staff activities for the entire school year. College interns also assist in the year-long development of the materials. Student Leadership in Action students provide data and coordinate with the yearbook committee. Yearbooks are available for sale in the fourth quarter of every year, and books from prior years are also available for viewing at the front office.
